Sigiriya or Pidurangala

Sigiriya or Pidurangala?

Sigiriya or Pidurangala Rock in Sri Lanka? Iconic Sigiriya Rock (also known as Lion Rock) or scenic Pidurangala Rock?

If you’re keen for a high energy day, it is indeed possible to climb both rocks, plus the Dambulla Cave in the same day (as I did). Each activity takes around 1.5 hours (depending on your fitness level & pace). So, if you plan on doing this then be prepared for a 30k step day & some potentially tired legs in the morning.

This article just discusses the weigh-up between the two rock climbs (Pidurangala & Sigiriya). So, if you would like to know more about the Dambulla Cave Complex too, then you can read more here.

Sigiriya Rock

The info:

Sigiriya Rock is a UNESCO World Heritage site & one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmarks. At the top of the rock, there are ruins of a 5th-century palace & incredible 360 views.

The price:

The price for ‘foreigners’ is 10,000LKR, making it a pricy option. However, it is a must-see for history buffs & those eager to explore Sri Lanka’s ancient royal heritage.

The climb:

The rock has steps, so is reasonably easy in terms of technicality. That said, it is still a fair hike with 1200 of them…

Pidurangala Rock

The info:

Climb Pidurangala to see the Buddha 3/4 of the way up & the stunning panoramic views of Sigiriya & Sigiriya Rock at the top. There are fewer people than Sigiriya Rock. This is because it is less known & there’s less to see. Ensure you remember something to cover your shoulders & knees as there is a temple that you pass on the way up, & they are strict on this.

The price:

There is a 1,000LKR entrance fee, which is much more budget friendly.

The climb:

Pidurangala Rock is a more rustic & adventurous climb. There is a bit of scrambling near the summit.

Summary: Sigiriya or Pidurangala?

If you’re on a budget, prefer fewer crowds, &/or enjoy exercise, Pidurangala is the way to go.

However, if you want to see the ruins, &/or don’t mind the higher price, Sigiriya is unmatched in its cultural significance & stunning ruins.

I thoroughly enjoyed doing both as they offer different things. Plus, they are only a 24 minute walk away from one another. That said, if I personally was asked to suggest one rock, I would opt for Sigiriya Rock.

You can climb both in shorts but ensure you carry a scarf with you to cover up in case asked, especially for Pidurangala.
